Our Get Help App program gives us, along with our team of game changing volunteers and interns, the chance to leverage technology for social change. Along this same vein of revolutionary use of technology in seeking to solve social issues, we plan to roll out our Vet Help App phone program (Buffalo, NY) and Children With Incarcerated Parents (Los Angeles) programs for 2020. All intern and volunteer positions are remote and unpaid. 

1. Volunteer/Peer Mentor
Location: Remote
The basis of our Get Help App (GHAPP) is to reduce recidivism by providing ex-offenders with our app. Using this app, our program participants can connect directly to our mentors fielding calls at our call center as well as our referral resource database.

Mentors are experienced advisers and supporters; individuals, experienced in areas relevant to the individuals they are working with, who advises and guides a younger or less experienced person. A mentor (or adviser, counselor, guide, tutor, teacher, guru) is defined as a knowledgeable person who holds vast experience and perspective in a particular area who is open to sharing his or her life experiences in order to advance the personal and professional growth of another person.

Our Mentors are:

  • Interested in helping others succeed. They have a genuine interest in other people’s lives and experience pleasure when helping others reach their goals.

  • While not required, being able to speak a second language, having experience in the fields of counseling, psychology, or applicable life experience to help better understand (and therefore handle our participants’ needs) are a plus.

Requirement: All Mentors MUST participate in a one-hour live training webinar and pass an on-line exam before mentorship can begin.

2. Resource Database Volunteer/Intern

Location: Remote
Resource Database Interns will research and contact local organizations, businesses and other institutions in order to update and maintain FREE’s resource database used by our mentors. In addition to gathering, organizing and updating data for our database, interns will help design templates for future data input.

3. Development: Volunteer/Intern

Location: Remote

Development Interns will be tasked with a critical responsibility: fundraising, establishing and maintaining relationships with our funders (businesses, institutions, organizations), and creating both hard-copy and online promotional tools to position FREE as an ideal beneficiary of their funding. Research and interpersonal communication skills are important for this position. Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in meetings with funders, development consultants, as well as ongoing communications initiatives.

4. Social Media: Intern/Volunteer

Location: Remote

Our Social Media Interns establish FREE’s online presence in a variety of social media channels and platforms. Our Social Media Coordination Interns are responsible for cultivating our reputation, thought leadership and deep understanding of the issues related to recidivism and reentry by ex-offenders. Using a variety of social media platforms, interns will post on a daily basis to keep a “buzz” happening in the cyber community.

5. Videographer Volunteer/Intern

Location: Remote

We are looking for a Videographer Volunteer/Intern to shoot and edit internal corporate communications, must have experience working in a social media driven Video editing position for at least one year with Final Cut pro experience.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for shooting and editing content for internal and external platforms, as well as for developing and executing social media programs that are aligned with company objectives.

  • Shoot and edit video as part of communications team.
  • Create embeddable web videos for two external company platforms, as well as for the company’s new internal video channel network.
  • Develop, manage and monitor social media programs, including identifying and pursuing external social media opportunities.
  • Monitor blogs and social media sites to quickly identify important stories and coverage to send to the appropriate team.
  • Social media campaign outreach through key bloggers/writers, fielding and handling social media requests; coordinating social media training.

Requirements:

  • Minimum 1-year experience with social media
  • Proven experience with Final Cut editing software.
  • Experience with shooting and editing videos on a deadline basis Experience in a news environment preferred.
  • Experience creating embeddable web videos Knowledge of web traffic analysis (e.g. Omniture) Eligibility Requirements

6. Volunteer Coordinator Intern

Location: Remote

We are seeking a competent Volunteer Coordinator Intern to recruit and manage volunteers. You will be responsible for allocating responsibilities and retaining the best volunteers possible. The goal is to ensure that our organization is always staffed with the best and most reliable individuals, and that they are correctly utilized for the fulfillment of our mission. The volunteer coordinator provides professional staff support to FREE employees.

Responsibilities:

  • Source and recruit volunteers through various techniques (databases, e-mail, social media etc.)
  • Collect information on availabilities and skills
  • Arrange for appropriate training when needed
  • Produce schedules for everyday activities
  • Assign responsibilities to the right people for special events
  • Coordinate teams of volunteers for large-scale actions
  • Communicate frequently with volunteers to ensure they are satisfied and well-placed
  • Disseminate information for upcoming actions and events
  • Keep detailed records of volunteers’ information and assignments
  • Ensure the purpose of the organization and its actions is clearly communicated
  • Complete FREE volunteer training
  • Assist in the recruiting, screening, interviewing and training of new volunteers
  • Review new cases and assign appropriate volunteers, in consultation with the executive director
  • Prepare and distribute assignment documentation
  • Help develop initial case plans and ongoing strategies for advocacy
  • Review and distribute volunteer court reports
  • Maintain case files in office
  • Attend court hearings when possible and track court dates
  • Provide assistance and consultation for volunteers as needed and when requested
  • Assist volunteers and office in completion of volunteer/case stat sheets
  • Participate in volunteer evaluations as assigned by the executive director
  • Oversee assigned mentors and assist with identified needs
  • Attend staff meetings and assist in the evaluation of the program
  • Attend in-service trainings and assist with coordination if requested
  • Assist with volunteer appreciation events
  • Provide office coverage as assigned by the executive director
  • Complete work time sheets monthly
  • Attend conferences/seminars/meetings as requested by the executive director
  • Participate in performance evaluations of this position as directed by the executive director
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the executive director or the chair of the board

Requirements:

  • Proven experience as operations director or similar position
  • Experience in volunteering locally and/or internationally
  • Experience in recruiting through various channels
  • Working knowledge of databases and MS Office (especially Excel)
  • Excellent organizational and team coordination abilities
  • A pleasant, outgoing personality
  • Bachelor’s degree in social service-related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • The ability to communicate with, supervise and empower volunteers to be effective in their roles—experience with volunteers preferred
  • The ability to work cooperatively with different types of personalities

8. Partnership Development

Location: Remote

Because our reach is so broad (the entire United States), we are in need of Partnership Development Interns that possess a very high level of communication skills. The partnership agencies we work with in jails, prisons, ministries and probation and parole divisions need to be constantly updated on changes and additions to our programs. This is a position for those who like a routine interacting with a stable group of partners.

10. Business Development Interns

  • Note: This position is only available to students pursuing degrees in the fields of Business, Finance or Accounting.

Location: Remote

As a Social Enterprise, part of FREE’s mission is creating business that will employ our population when other businesses will not. 2019 is going to be a very big year for FREE in the Social Enterprise arena. FREE Construction will begin working on its first projects and we will be announcing a very large and game-changing initiative in December 2018. If you are interested in getting in on the ground floor and helping us to build financial models, creating projects and assisting in business development, this is definitely the position for you.
